Head Tennis Coach, Parkway South High School
Parkway South High School is looking for a new Head Tennis Coach, beginning with girls season, August 2026. The previous Head Coach is retiring in May 2026 after 30+ years of service.
Duties:
· Overall supervision of the Parkway South Tennis Program, including coaching Varsity Boys and Girls teams, and oversight of Head JV Coach and assistants, and their operation of the JV Boys and Girls teams.
o Girls season starts around the first of August and concludes in the Middle of October with the State Championship. Boys season starts around the first of March and concludes in mid May with the State Championship.
o The highest priority of the Head Coach is to ensure the physical and emotional safety of all participating students and staff
· Prepare and execute Varsity tennis practice plans
· Coach all home and away Varsity tennis matches, and ensure safe transportation to and from away matches
· Ensure that Parkway South High complies with all lineup and match results reporting requirements of the Missouri State High School Athletic Association (MSHSAA)
· Work with other Varsity coaches to determine seeding for District Tournament
· Work with the Head JV Coach, and Parkway South High Activities Director and staff, to ensure an effective interscholastic competition schedule is arranged for both Varsity and JV levels
· Work with the Parkway South High Athletic Trainer during practices and matches to ensure that tennis students are physically ready to play, and receive timely and appropriate treatment, including sitting out, for any injuries they might have
· Order and install all needed tennis supplies and equipment as needed, including nets, rol-dris, scorecards, tennis balls, ball machines, and all other supply needs, and ensure that the courts are ready for safe play
· Communicate regularly with tennis students’ parents so they are fully informed about tennis events, schedules, and other developments, and create a welcoming environment for parents to come to practices and matches, and to support the Varsity and JV teams through various volunteer opportunities
· Represent the tennis team at events such as Curriculum Night and Spirit Night
Qualifications:
· College degree from a fully accredited institution
· At least10 years of experience as a tennis teaching pro or school coach—this need not be as a head coach, but must include at least 5 years teaching juniors age 18 and younger
· Certified as a tennis-teaching professional by either the Racquet Sports Professionals Association, the Professional Tennis Registry, or USTA Coaching. If the candidate meets all qualifications for being certified but is not yet certified, employment may be offered contingent on the candidate earning that certification by the end of their first year as the Head Coach
· Tennis playing experience at minimum rated at the NTRP 4.0 level, with 4.5 or higher preferred
· At least 3 references who can attest to the candidate’s coaching skills, interpersonal skills, and character
· Athlete-centered, transformational leadership style and ability to work effectively with diverse student-athletes
· Commitment to the Parkway South High philosophy of youth sports participation: Player development as person and character development. This is truly education-based athletics. So, we want to compete to win, and we train to win, but we also care about and emphasize developing the whole athlete--mentally, socially, emotionally, and academically. Our approach is described by the phrase Compete-Learn-Honor, where effort, learning and growth, and showing high character are more important goals than winning, along with ensuring student-athlete safety and that our students are having fun being a tennis team member!
· Excellent planning, problem-solving, and communication skills
· Ability to work into early evening hours for coaching Varsity matches
Compensation:
Competitive for area head tennis coach positions. Most high school tennis coaches are employed full time as educators or tennis teaching pros. The Parkway South High Head Tennis Coach position is a supplement to primary income, not a source of primary income. You do it mainly for the love of the game and love of working with students to help them grow as both people and players.
